We Learned By Nagib Alkhwlani

Nagib Alkhwlani

We learned
To raise the verb and the subject,
And to put the object in the accusative,
To praise the killing and the killer,
And to mock my own slain blood.

We learned
That honesty is a nominal beginning,
And that lying is a honeyed predicate,
And to put the present in the accusative,
When the particle of accusation appears,
For accusation is for the present —
A most reasonable report.

We learned
That the thief is a human,
And we abandoned our conscience,
So today he became the one in charge.

We learned
That in the age of knowledge,
Ignorance dies,
And that death is the destiny
Of that unknown.

And that peace is a right,
In this world, for every human,
But in Gaza we forgot peace,
And we forgot the human,
So blood became a great curse
That haunts us in this world,
We thought it would disappear.

We learned
Without knowledge, without values,
Without truth,
So our hopes were lost
Between illusion and the hoped-for.

Today we built a rocket,
To rival the West,
Yet we could not manufacture
A single Panadol pill.

We learned
That love of land is an inheritance,
But we did not preserve its dignity,
Its safety,
And it was lost to our own machinations,
And the homeland became isolated.

We learned
To drag the letter Ya,
In my homeland,
Into the unknown.
